German Tour Operators Go For “Greek Breakfast” At ITB 2014

Leading German tour operators at the recent ITB Berlin exhibition said they were interested in including the “Greek Breakfast” feature as a reference in their travel packages for destinations in Greece.

The Greek Breakfast is an initiative taken by the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels which utilizes and connects the cultural – gastronomic wealth of the country with the Greek hotel business.

Participating in the ITB expo was the first attempt of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels to promote the “Greek Breakfast” initiative abroad.

The program is designed by the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels and has been in operation since 2010.The aim is to enrich the breakfast offered in Greek hotels with pure and unique Greek products as well as with traditional local dishes from every region of Greece and to give Greek hotel guests the chance to know the gastronomic wealth of our country and taste at breakfast the innumerable Greek products and dishes which are at the heart of the Mediterranean Diet.

The Mediterranean Diet is not just a modern dietary trend but is according to UNESCO the “intangible cultural heritage of mankind”.

The main products of the Mediterranean diet such as the bread, the rusks, the olive oil, the olives, the yoghurt, the honey, the cheese products, the cured meats, the fresh vegetables, the legumes, the pies, the sweets and the fresh fruit form the basis of Greek breakfast.

Or    Make a Day Trip to Smyrni (Izmir), Turkey

                                         Izmir-tower

Departing from Chios by boat at 08:30 to Cesme, Turkey (40 minutes trip). From there we will proceed to Izmir by bus (approx. 1 hour).

Due to the Great Fire of 1920s, there is a relative lack of historical sights in Izmir, especially when considered how old the city really is (more than 5000 years old). We will be able to spend time though in Konak Square and see the Asansör (Elevator), You may also go to the Alsancak, the small streets with lots of bars in old Ottoman era houses, where you can have a Çay (Turkish tea) or a beer and try several waterpipe flavors or to Kadifekale, the old castle on the hill. Some remains of the original Roman city of Smyrna can be seen at Agora.

We will walk along the Kordon, the waterfront promenade and we will not miss a visit to the Kemeraltı.

Return to Cesme by bus and by boat at 17:30 to Chios, where you will have the opportunity to relax and prepare for the big night.

Evening transfer from hotel to VRONTOU to experience the unique custom called “Rouketopolemos” (literally Rocket-War) and which takes place annually during the evening Easter Mass. Two rival church congregations in the town perform a "Rocket War" by firing tens of thousands of home-made rockets across town, with the objective of hitting the bell tower of the church of the other side. The two rival parishes are St. Mark's and Panaghia Ereithiani, the respective churches built on two hilltops about 400 meters away from each other. The church buildings themselves and the nearby buildings have to be extensively boarded up and protected with metal sheets and mesh for the occasion.

We will observe the event from a safe distance and then return to the hotel for the traditional “mageiritsa” soup.

21/4/2014

Free day to discover the town of Chios, relax and return to Athens by boat at 16:30.
